Schnauzers, as their name implies, originate from Germany. At first they were humble farm dogs in Bavaria. But these tough little, or not so little, dogs have conquered the Earth.

Schnauzers can be found anywhere from New York to Berlin; from Sydney to Rio.

More information on the origins of the Schnauzer may be found in the Schnauzer History section of this site.

Born to Sniff

To a very large degree, a lot of their behavior has roots in their past. You'll never have a leisurely walk with a Schnauzer in the woods or any other place where there are rodents or other wildlife. To a Schnauzer, every walk is an adventure.

Schnauzers were bred to hunt down mice and vermin sometime in Bavaria, the southern region of Germany, during the late 1400's. Over time they were bred larger to herd livestock and smaller to be able squeeze into tighter areas to get at more rodents.

Teutonic Terrier

Miniature Schnauzers are the only breed of terrier that originates outside of the British Isles. Terriers are known for their high energy, small size, and urge to hunt vermin. The word "terrier" derives from the Latin word for ground ("terra").
