For help on playing Real Audio clips, go to The Real Audio homepage.

Note: The links on this page are no longer updated!!!

Q: Hey jackass, these freakin' files won't play on my computer!!!

A: You have to have a program that will play audio/aiff files installed on your computer and set to be used as a "Helper Application" by your browser.

Here's what happens when you click on a link to a sound file:
Your browser reads that the file is an audio/aiff file. It then tries to open the Helper Application that is set for audio/aiff in your browser's preferences. If the application is installed on your computer, then that application automatically launches and you are soon rolling on the floor laughing at the hilarity of prank call madness. If it is not installed, the browser will ask you if you want to save the file and you are left with a file with which you can't do anything.

The Solution: Get a player that will play audio/aiff files. Go to your "Preferences" menu. Go to "Helper Applications". Set audio/aiff to automatically launch your sound player program. This can be easier said than done, so here's how:

For Macs:

Soundapp 2.0 (fat). If the first link fails, you may want to try another site.
SoundMachine 2.5.4

You will need Stuffit Expander or some other decoding/expansion utility to decompress these files. If you're not sure if you have it or not, just click on one of the above links and see if it automatically decodes and decompresses it for you.

If it doesn't work: You need to obtain Stuffit Expander. If you're gonna be on the web, you're gonna need Stuffit Expander. So let's just get it out of the way right now.

To obtain Stuffit Expander with Netscape 2.0 or a similar browser:

  1. Go into Netscape General Preferences. Go to Helper Apps.
  2. Change the preference for application/mac-binhex40 from "Launch Application StuffIt Expander" to "Use Netscape as Viewer"
  3. Download Stuffit Expander 4.0 to your hard drive. Netscape will automatically decode it.
  4. Change the preference for application/mac-binhex40 back to "Launch Application StuffIt Expander"
  5. Run the StuffIt Expander installer from your hard drive.
Now go to your "Preferences" menu. Go to "Helper Applications". Make sure audio/aiff is set to automatically launch Soundapp or Soundmachine.

Now you can click on my links and the browser will do the rest for you.

If you download Soundapp or Soundmachine successfully and they continue "givin' you shit": You may need Sound Manager 3.1. If you have System 7.5.3 or above, you DO NOT need Sound Manager 3.1. If you are running pre-7.5.3, throw Sound Manager 3.1 into your Extensions folder, then try running the sound player programs. It can't hurt.

For Windows:

Note: The current versions of these Windows programs DO NOT play aiff files, although their documentation claims they do. Please use the RealAudio versions of the pranks if you are on Windows.

Wham 1.3.3. If the first link is busy, try another site.
Windows Play Any 1.2a. If the first link doesn't work, try the mirror site.
TZPlay V2.00 for Dos. Works with any WSS compatible soundcard (e.g. Turtle Beach Tropez).

If you can't unzip these files: You need to get a copy of Winzip or Pkunzip.
  1. Download Winzip95.exe to your hard drive. If that server is busy, try downloading it from a mirror site.
  2. Run the file you have just downloaded from your hard drive. This will install Winzip onto your system.
  3. Run the newly installed Winzip program. From within Winzip, open the file you want to unzip (wham133.zip).
Now go into the "Preferences" window in your browser. Go into "Helper Applications". Set audio/aiff to automatically launch your player program.
