NOTE: This post was originally published on June 1, but due to a database error. It was lost. I’m am reposting it for posterity (and it’s pretty cool technology).

It used to be that all you needed was two turntables and a microphone, but now you get all that old school DJ’ing goodness onto one touchscreen device.

Check out this great video which shows a Windows 7 powered touch screen DJ setup that emulates

The Windows team will be on-hand at the International Mutek festival, between June 1 and June 5, to demo the latest DJ technology.

Here’s some more info from the Windows Experience blog:

Today, I was at the Microsoft Office in DC for TechFair 2011, which showcases some of the work being done at Microsoft Research.

By far, the coolest demo was the Worldwide Telescope and what the team has done in regards to visualizing earthquake sensor data. The hope is by improving visualization of this sensor data, patterns will emerge that could predict major earthquakes.

FUSE Labs was also there demoing a socially integrated search that I hope to be able to talk more about in the near future.

Another great demo was the 3D Scanning with a Regular Camera, which is supremely cool. Check out this video demo of it in action.

On a more serious note, Microsoft Research is tackling some serious health care issues, too.

The medical profession has begun to explore the potential for a Virtual Colonoscopy (VC), which uses images of the colon generated by computed-tomography (CT) scans, and the project being show at TechFair demonstrates a high-performance VCViewer — a GPU-based, 3D-rendering viewer for colon-cancer screening. The VCViewer provides a gesture-based UI for the navigation of the imagery and enables the images to be manipulated for viewing at different angles to help with discovery, analysis, and diagnosis of observed anomalies. This image processing involved was developed at the 3D Imaging Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the entire project is a collaborative effort that also involves Intel and results in a non-invasive colonoscopy that takes around 3 minutes rather than 30 minutes.

  • NUI in the Public Sector Concept Video

Parts.Common.Body.Summary.cshtml – The template for summary of a content item's body.

The Department of Homeland Security and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory teamed up to produce this concept video which showcases the use of NUI in a disaster response scenario.

Interestingly enough, most of the technology is commercially available now and relatively affordable. The only exception is the heads up display in the car. I can’t say I’ve seen anything quite like that just yet on the street.

Another point to note is that there’s no concept of different applications: the entire experience is immersive. Chat, video, charts, maps, and web browsing all happen within context.

    Very interesting indeed.

For a more detailed look at the video, Precision Information has provided annotated versions.

Q: What happens when a geek has an old snowboard and an older desktop lying around?

A: a very cool case mod.

Here’s a very cool video from Microsoft Research showing off some amazing augmented reality technology.

A project titled Augmented Projectors shows the potential to augment environments with digital graphics – this becomes particularly interesting when the projector has an awareness of the environment in which they’re being used. Yes, projectors that understand the room they're in. David Molyneaux and Steve Hodges are two of the researchers behind this work which has been submitted to Pervasive 2012 and when I showed it to some architect friends, it drew oooh and ahhs.

I know Thanksgiving is next week here in the US, but these Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns the staff at one Disney hotel made are too good not to share.

The on that caught my initially was the TIE Fighter pumpkin.

The rest of the contest entries are just as creative:

The pirate ship entry (Captain Jack-O-Lantern Sparrow) is by far the most elaborate pumpkin decoration I’ve ever seen. As an added bonus, it was playing music from the movie. They even had Mickey walking the plank: a very bold move. Winking smile

The MIT Media Lab has developed the world’s first camera capable of capturing one trillion frames per second.

Yes, you read that right: one trillion fps, a speed that allows the camera to track light particles as they move through the air. Now that’s fast.

    Just watch the video. Smile
