Imagine embarking on a journey where creativity meets computation, crafting a small-scale supercomputer right in the comfort of your home. The heart of this ambitious project? A constellation of Raspberry Picos, complemented by a Raspberry Pi supervisor, operating harmoniously to create a 9.6 GHz computing marvel. Intrigued? Let’s delve into how you can bring the concept of a DIY supercomputer, affectionately dubbed “Lattice Titanium,” to life.
The Hardware Foundation
Based on content from dr Jonas Birch
At the core of this project lies a simple yet ingenious idea: utilize multiple Raspberry Picos, each equipped with an Arm Cortex CPU clocked at 150 MHz. With dual cores in each Pico, assembling 32 of them yields an impressive total of 9.6 GHz of processing power. But why stop there? Instead of confining our creation within a conventional PC box, let’s craft a bespoke enclosure using Blender 3D software, and have it laser-crafted from 100% pure titanium. The result? A supercomputer that not only functions superbly but also exudes cool sophistication.
Custom OS and Programming Magic
The ingenuity of this project doesn’t stop at hardware. Writing a custom operating system is both a challenge and a creative triumph. The OS will run a bytecode virtual machine, utilizing a personally designed assembly language to program the machine. It’s an opportunity to delve into computer science fundamentals while pushing the boundaries of what home computing can achieve.
The system will allow programs to be supplied with an input file, automatically divisioning it into 64 parts, distributing them across processors for parallel computing. Once processed, results are aggregated and output as a robust job file, ready to execute. Transferring this job via SCP (Secure Copy Protocol) takes us into the realm of networking and data security, further expanding the educational scope of this project.
A Collaborative Vision
The dream of building Lattice Titanium doesn’t have to be solitary. By sharing our progress and enthusiasm, we can rally a community of curious minds eager to learn and contribute. Each step, from designing the PCB to writing the code, becomes an opportunity for shared learning and collaboration.
If the prospect of harnessing this technological exploration excites you, get involved! Let your voice be a crucial part of this creation by subscribing to updates or engaging with fellow creators. Together, we can turn the exciting blueprint of Lattice Titanium into a reality, one Raspberry Pico at a time.
This project represents the fusion of tech imagination and hands-on DIY spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned maker or an intrigued beginner, the journey of crafting Lattice Titanium could be as rewarding as the finished supercomputer itself.
