I have a question that has been bothering me for quite some time. WHY is humanity trying to build an intelligence greater than ourselves? Why are a handful of tech companies allowed to pursue research like this without a broader discussion taking place in society first?
Do we, the people, WANT this kind of technology (whether true AI in the future or advanced machine learning now) deployed into society with no plan, no concern for the people it will impact, and the radical changes it will force in a short timeframe?
I was and I am an “art kid.” STEM has never been a strong interest of mine. I can’t help but feel quite a lot of fear and a little bit of resentment toward companies that are building machine learning technologies like the above. It feels like they are infringing on what should be a human field. There is a reason art and writing fall under the HUMANities label.
