Business Wars is a podcast that chronicles the fight for your business, taking a peek behind the shiny logos and press releases to uncover the gritty details behind the scenes.

Fascinating stories made better with amazing audio production values and killer narration.

Below is Episode 1 of an 8-part series on the brutal business battle between Netflix and Blockbuster, and later HBO.

It all started around 1997, with a guy named Marc Randolph and his mathematician friend Reed Hastings. Randolph and Hastings knew they’d have to take on Blockbuster, but what they didn’t anticipate was that their business model would take on network television and eventually change the entire movie industry.

This was an 8-year total war that left innumerable casualties in its wake: thousands of hollowed out buildings and economic losses in the billions.

The Power BI team has a big release for the Power BI Desktop team. The most exciting feature this month is a preview of Composite models.

This feature lets you seamlessly extend your DirectQuery models with other DirectQuery sources or even imported data. We have heard from many of you, especially those in larger enterprises, that this is an essential feature and are glad to share it with all of you. We also have many reporting features this month, including an update to our visual header that lets you not only put visual all the way to the top of your canvas, but also have extensive control over the functionality and formatting of the header. NOTE: There is a minor correction for this video. Under the data connectivity section, for the Web By Example connector, it should have been Html.Table not Web.BroswerContents.

Jean-Sébastien Brunner joins Lara Rubbelke to discuss new features that enable you to implement the intelligent cloud, intelligent edge vision for streaming analytics: Stream Analytics running real-time analytics with custom code on IoT Edge. We also discuss substreams, which is a new time management feature for independently processing the timeline of each device (very useful for an IoT scenario), and the recently announced Session Window.

Show Notes

Recently, this post of the Best Jobs in the US came across my news feed.Note that “Data Scientist” has been knocked out of first place by “Machine Learning Engineer.” This title didn’t even exist a few years ago.So then, how do we prepare kids for the future of work when the jobs don’t exist yet. Simple: you prepare them with the fundamentals. As I recorded this show, I was joined by a distinguished guest rather by surprise. See, anything can happen on a live stream!Check out his coding camp’s website at http://fairhavencodingcamp.com and if you live in the DC area, sign up your middle/high schooler today!
